Game Boy Advance SP - Flame

Game Boy Advance SP - Flame Reviews

Other Picture

Game Boy Advance SP - Flame Feature

  • This incredible redesign features a fantastic flip-screen; unopened, the unit fits easily in your pocket
  • When it's opened, gamers are in for a treat -- the screen can display up to 32,000 colors, and has a backlit screen for comfortable game viewing
  • Redesigned button and D-pad placement make for hours of more comfortable playing
  • Powered by a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery that provides 18 hours of play with the light off(up to 10 hours with the light on)
  • Games are backwards-compatible -- your Game Boy Advance games will play just fine on the GBA SP
Many decried the original Game Boy Advance's reflective LCD screen and its reliance on external light sources. The Game Boy Advance SP's main feature--optional backlighting--fixes this complaint nicely, but it's the wealth of other features that makes this system so surprisingly good.

At first look, you might think the SP is a sleek travel alarm clock. When closed, it's just as tall and deep as the original GBA, but only half as wide. Due to its clamshell design, the screen is always protected from everyday scratches. A small button in the center of the console turns on the backlighting element for use in low-light situations, like in a moving car.

Game Boy Advance angle diagram The SP comes with a well-designed power adapter that recharges a built-in battery; its prongs fold in for easier storage. Our informal tests found that it takes about four hours to fully charge (you can even play it while it's plugged in and charging), and the battery lasts about 11 hours with the backlighting constantly on--your results may vary. Using the backlighting less often will conserve battery power.

With separately sold cables, you can connect the Game Boy Advance SP to other GBAs for multiplayer gaming (above) or to the Nintendo GameCube (below) to access secret levels, exchange data, or use other special features that vary from game to game.
The quality of the backlighting is very good. It's bright and clear when looking directly at it, but degraded from other angles. This is only a problem for friends who are watching the screen from over your shoulder.

But size, power, and affordability do not come without trade offs. There's no headphone jack here, though Nintendo promises an adapter. The system isn't very loud at its highest volume, and the sound can be turned down to socially acceptable levels. The L and R shoulder buttons are a fraction of the size they were on the GBA, and thus are harder to hit. Also, the reduced size of the SP is slightly less comfortable for adult hands than the GBA, but perhaps more comfortable for smaller hands. The cartridge port placement on the lower part of the console is fine for GBA games, since they are flush with the console body, but older Game Boy Color carts will stick out in a way that takes some getting used to.

Open it up and the hinge will seek out a preferred, pre-set angle (about 150 degrees), though you can open it a bit wider or narrower for your own comfort. The hinge stands up well to lateral pressure, and over all, the SP seems just as rugged as its predecessor--which has proven to be very rugged, indeed. --Porter B. Hall

Fatal Frame

Fatal Frame Reviews

Other Picture

Fatal Frame Feature

  • Based on a true story, Fatal Frame, a horror adventure game, leaves its victims breathless as they become immersed in a world full of supernatural spirits and sheer terror. Guided by her sixth sense and armed only with an antique camera, Miku sets out to solve the mystery of her brother's sudden disappearance. As the story unfolds, she discovers gruesome details about the Himura mansion's troubled past. The property and surrounding area have a dark history involving grisly murders, an evil cult, and restless spirits.
With a couple of exceptions, the PlayStation2 has been starved for quality survival horror games. Thank goodness then for the arrival of Fatal Frame, with its mix of Japanese mythology, atmospheric graphics, and freaky sound effects.

The game tells the tale of a young girl searching for her missing brother in a cursed mansion--all fairly straightforward stuff. Fans of the genre will feel right at home as the backstory is quickly filled out, allowing the process of ghost hunting to begin--and unlike the comic lunacy of the GameCube’s Luigi’s Mansion, the spooks and specters here are of a very adult nature. Screaming and moaning accompany the arrival of the ghosts, and they don’t shut up until they’re "killed"--an act that requires a camera. Fatal Frame eschews pistols and shotguns in favor of a celluloid-death approach, which makes sense given the fact that the opposition are well beyond the living to begin with. In camera mode, the heroine’s faithful Box Brownie pops up in a first-person style and it’s necessary to keep the ghoul within the focusing reticule in order to drain maximum power from it. It sounds a little lame, but in practice it works well and is an effective way of explaining just how to "shoot" ghosts.

The plot development is nicely done, and there are a host of puzzles to solve that are well balanced and never get too tough, but it’s the graphics and sound work that really make Fatal Frame special. Cutscenes are rendered in a variety of styles designed to increase the tension, and the sparse soundtrack works wonders when it kicks in. While it’s not the strongest title in the PS2’s gaming arsenal, it’ll certainly keep survival horror fans busy until the next installment of Silent Hill rolls around--remember, though, it’s best played with the sound up loud, in the dark, on your own... --Chris Russell Description:
Based on a true story, Fatal Frame recounts Miku's investigation for her brother Mafuyu, who has been missing for two weeks. Her latest clue leads her to the abandoned Himuro mansion, a place that local townsfolk fear. Gifted with a supernatural sixth sense, you'll guide Miku as she explores the areas in the mansion where Mafuyu was last seen investigating the disappearance of three other people. Armed with only a camera, you must discover the connection between mysterious disappearances, restless spirits, and ritual sacrifices.

Featuring a combination of an extensive updating of features from earlier games in the series, alongside a range of new play options designed to heighten the experience of both the player on the mound and at the plate, MLB 2K10 is a baseball gaming experience not to be missed. Additional features include, new pitch selection and batter's swing functionality, multiple game modes — including franchise and career modes — and a variety of multiplayer options.

Better Pitching Through Analytics
As in the previous release in the MLB 2K series, pitching in MLB 2K10 requires a combination of analysis of scouting reports and hurling technique on the mound. Scouting reports are based on 2K Games' exclusive "Inside Edge" data service, which provides up-to-date information on AI representations of real batters across a wide range of data points. With this players can make an educated guess as to their best chances using particular pitches against a particular batter based on everything from the current count, whether it is a night or day game, to how far into the season it is. Pitching technique is centered around a gesture pitching mechanism, where in players deliver pitches through specific controller inputs using face buttons and/or the analog stick. With regards to this, the difference this time around is that in addition to these enacting inputs, MLB 2K10 incorporates a push button pitch selection system. Players must still input the correct series of gestures for the pitch they intend, which are more difficult for more complex pitches, but this new push button step also provides the game with precise information as to what pitch you intend to throw. With is extra information, which the game uses as a baseline for compiling analytics, players can see where their gestures for particular pitches are off, and correct them as need be.

An Improved Hitting Experience with "Batter's Eye"
Players' experience at the plate has also been improved in MLB 2K10 through a combination of data and new features. Just as with pitchers, batters have access to 2K Sports' "Insider Edge" data to help them make better decisions in specific game situations based on a variety of stats related to themselves if playing as a representative of a real MLB player, or the pitcher they face. But the new feature that completely changes the batters experience in "Batter's Eye." With this, highly skilled batters can get occasional, spilt second views of what the pitch is going to be. Used in conjunction with new batting functionality like defensive and contact swings, batters can potentially fend off pitches until the count is in their favor, and/or they are ready to make an educated guess at what the pitch is going to be and swing accordingly. As with the pitching analytics available in defensive positions, offensive players have access to a batting analyzer at the push of a button to figure out what they are doing wrong and right at the plate.

Fielding and Baserunning
Of course baseball isn't just about initial conflict between pitcher and hitter, so MLB 2K10 gives you all you need to finish the play from any place on the field. Fielding and baserunning in MLB 2K10 features easy controls and tons of great animations just as in earlier releases, but in this most recent version players can also now cue up the actions of their players while on defense, or from the basepads with simple controller inputs. In the case of fielders, once the defensive player is selected, simply press the face button for the appropriate base or cutoff man you want. Once your man makes the stop, he will throw to your chosen spot automatically. This is a big help, especially when trying to turn a quick double play, or in the case of a ball that makes it all the way to the wall. Cueing up the actions of base runners is just as easy. For example, in the event of a full count where you want to send your runners regardless of the pitch, or during a steal attempt, simply select your base runner(s) and use your game controller's trigger to set events in motion. If you change your mind you can just as easily send them scrambling back with a the same trigger.
